The harbour is well protected against winds by Portland in the south, Chesil Beach in the west and Dorset in the north, which makes it one of the best sailing venues in Great Britain. The climate is temperate because of the mild seas and the variations between day and night and annual temperatures are very small. This feature makes Portland a great destination no matter of the time you choose to spend your holiday. It is unique for its wildlife: birds, animals and plants. A really interesting thing about Portland is that they discovered dinosaur tracks from the Purbeck Limestone Formation, so not only will you enjoy a truly wonderful vacation, but also a journey way back in time.
