Saint John is one of the islands belonging to the archipelago called the Virgin Islands. It lies in the Caribbean Sea and from an administrative point of view it belongs to the unincorporated territory of the United States. Although it is the smallest island in this archipelago, Saint John is a famous touristic destination that attracts hundreds of travelers from all over the world.
The most prominent settlement on this island is Cruz Bay. The complex ecosystem and natural treasures of the island have turned it into a protected area; more than half of Saint John’s territory belongs to the Virgin Islands National Park. Most tourists come to Saint John to hike or enjoy the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea where they can dive, perform kitesurfing, snorkeling and explore the area.
The first inhabitants of the island were an Indian tribe called the Taíno. They were followed by another tribe, the Arawak, and the Caribs. The island has a vast historical patrimony, and the traditions of the first indigenous populations have been preserved up to the present day. The first Europeans who settled here in the 18th century were the Danish. It the 20th century the island was acquired by the United States who bought the territory from the Dutch government.
Saint John is a location many foreigners sought after for its rich sugar cane plantation. This industry still works nowadays, but it has been outweighed by the tourism which is the most important source of income.
