Greifswalder Oie

Greifswalder Oie is situated on the island with the same name, in the western part of Rugen Island, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Region of Germany. The island is often referred to as Baltic Sea’s Helgoland, because it’s the furthest away from the mainland from all of the Baltic Sea islands. The area is a nature reserve and due to regulations, it allows only 50 tourists on the island each day. Visitors are offered island tours where they can observe the bird migrations or the geological features of the island like the Oier reef. The islands only artificial attraction is the lighthouse Greifswalder Oie, built more than 150 years ago. Its foundation stone was laid by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, and today, the 38.6 metre high tower allows tourists to climb it and enjoy a great 360 degree panorama of the surrounding Baltic Sea. The marina’s location allows sailors docked here to take trips towards Germany’s mainland, Rugen Island or further away on the Baltic Sea to Denmark or Sweden.
