One of the most breathtaking Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Greek Cyclades island group, and the nearest island to the neighboring Dodecanese island group. Located near Naxos and Ios, the island enchants guests with its wild beauty, traditional architecture and spectacular shorelines. Due to its prime location, close to Asia Minor and ancient towns such as Militos, Efessos and Alikarnasos, Amorgos was one of the first places through which the Ionians passed to the Cyclades Islands and onto the Greek mainland. It was its geographical position that made it extremely vulnerable to the pirate attacks. Amorgos remains isolated and with a slower rate of tourism development than the other Greek islands, providing an off-the-beaten-track destination.
Its unique charm and quiet atmosphere were the main features on which the famous French director, Luc Besson based his decision in shooting the movie "The Big Blue" here in 1988, which brought a lot of promotion to the island. The most intriguing village in Amorgos is Chora, the capital of the island, located at an altitude of 400 metres above the sea level. Home of the 13th century Venetian Castle, built in 1290 by Ieremias Gizis for the protection of the Amorgos Island and located on the Kastro (castle) rock, it stands out of the village of Chora like a faithful protector. Surrounding windmills, whitewashed houses and stoned paved streets, incredible Byzantine and early Christian churches add to the charm of the village, which resembles a labyrinth bathed in a mythical atmosphere.
An impressive landmark and the pride of Amorgos is The Monastery of Hozoviotissa, symbolizing man’s tribute to the Holy Mother. This is an 11th century structure built by Alexius Comnenus I as an ode to the Grace of Panagia, known as the Virgin Mary, who is also the saint protector of the island. Amorgos is celebrated for its untouched, spectacular beaches and the pure waters. Main Amorgos beaches are Katapola and Aegialis, while there are many other small coves to discover if one wishes to explore the island further. As most Amorgos beaches are totally secluded, nudism is frequently practiced on some shorelines. Agia Anna is a beautiful beach located very close to Chora, with rocky landscape, offering an incredible diving and snorkeling experience in the crystal waters of the Aegean Sea.
A perfect fishing spot, Agios Pavlos Beach lies roughly 8 kilometers away from the settlement of Aegialis and is known for its sparkling waters. Furthermore, the crystalline waters and the lush landscape of Aegiali, located 20km away from Chora will definitely draw you in and enchant you with its tall pines, which cast a blissful, cooling shade.
