East Macedonia and Thrace (Greek: Ανατολική Μακεδονία και Θράκη) is made of the north-eastern parts of the country, including the eastern part of the region of Greek Macedonia, Thrace, and two islands: Thassos and Samothrace. Eastern Macedonia and Thrace offer the visitor a magnificent combination of places and itineraries of archaeological and historical interest, tangible evidence of its very long history.
Explore the imposing mountainous area of Rodopi, the Rivers Evros and Nestos, many lakes and lagoons like Vistonida, which are protected under International Treaties, and enjoy bird-watching and other outdoor activities. Don't miss the Aggitis Cave, the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on Samothrace Island and the old city of Xanthi. Thassos (Θάσος in Greek) is the northernmost Greek island, and 12th largest by area, known also as the emerald island of the Aegean Sea.
Thassos is a green Greek island famous for its clean beaches, vegetation, and its mountainous terrain, including the highest peak Ypsario (Ipsario) at 1,205 metres. The town of Thassos is also known as Limenas Thasou (Harbour of Thassos). In and around Thasos, there are many ruins dating from antiquity, most of the finds from archaeological sites being on display at the Archaeological Museum of Thasos.
Samothrace (also known as Samothraki) is a standout amongst the roughest Greek islands, being known for its prosperity among the fishing industries. Samothrace has a wonderful scene with Mt Fengari (with its peak Fengari rising to 1,611 m) as the core bit of the island. Additionally, the island offers exquisite yellow fields and incredible waterfalls. The island's most renowned site is the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, Greek Hieron ton Megalon Theon with its the most famous artefact - the 2.5-metre marble statue of Nike, now known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace, dating from about 190 BC. It was discovered in pieces on the island in 1863 by the French archaeologist Charles Champoiseau, and is currently in the Louvre in Paris.
