Hiiumaa (or Hiiu County) is Estonia’s second largest island, situated on the Western coast of the country. It is a part of the West Estonian Archipelago, along with Saaremaa Island. The island has a rich history and maritime heritage, as signs of inhabitance were found over the years, dating back from the 4th century BC. Archaeologists have discovered many interesting things about the island’s history, with every expedition and dig they have engaged in. They found bones and tools that date from the Stone Age, a discovery that helped them realise what life was back then. Stories also speak of Germanic crusaders and the Teutonic Order.
Hiiumaa is one of the most naturally diverse parts of Estonia. The different types of landscapes and scenery quickly change as you travel the island, and only the summer can reveal the breathtaking beauty of Kopu and Tahkuna peninsulas and their golden sandy beaches. The climate of the island is quite different from the continental part of Estonia because it is surrounded by the sea; this means more sunny weather and less rain.
When it comes to choosing a place to stay, know that Hiiumaa has a small selection of chic, traditional, cozy accommodation units. At the end of the day, you know that people are the ones making the difference. Here is a selection of places to spend a few nights at Sonajala Hotel, Hotell Liilia, Ferienhaus Orjaku Moisakoha, Allika, Roograhu Harbour Guesthouse, Dagen Haus, Kivijuri Guesthouse, Padu Hotel. You may also want to consider Keldrimae Guesthouse, Lookese Hotell, Viinakook Guesthouse, Nordtooder Guesthouse, Villa Loona Boutique Hotel, Hobekala Guesthouse, Pihla Tourist Farm.
The Estonian cuisine has recipes that are traditionally based on potatoes, meat and fish. Although it has many original dishes, over the years some of them got foreign influences: German, Russian and Scandinavian. The four items that define the drinking and eating habits of the Estonian people are beer, vodka, rye bread and pork. Here are some of the traditional dishes you must try during your trip: black pudding with lingonberry sauce, rosolje (beetroot, potatoes and herring salad), pirukas. Smoked or marinated eel, and other types of fish, rhubarb pie and kringel (cardamom sweet bread) are also delicacies. You are probably used to hearing “Bon appetite” when your meal is being served, but the Estonians will wish you “May your bread last”. A travelling experience is not fulfilled until you have tried the local food, right? Your quest is a delicious and nutritious breakfast, a satisfying lunch or a light dinner. Here are some of the places you should add to your list: Gahwa Cafe, Lest & Lammas Grill, Muku Tare. You can also try Vetsi Tall, Liilia Restaurant, Priiankru Pub, Heltermaa Bar-Bistro, Sonajala Bar, Krog No 14.
When it comes to discovering the island, the best advice is to contact a local guide to get the most out of your trip. As you visit different attractions, you will also learn everything about the place’s history and discover a lot of interesting facts. If this is not an option for you, you will find everything you need in Kardla, where the tourist information centre is located. In truth, there is nothing more exciting than grabbing a backpack and a map and exploring on your own. There are all sort of museums, all very interesting and educational: Hiiumaa Military Museum, Hiiumaa Museum, Soru Museum, Soera Farm Museum. When it comes to historic sites, the most important ones are the Hill of Crosses, the ruins of Puhalepa Church, Suureimosa Castle, the burial place of Contract stones and the Kassari chapel and graveyard.
All in all, Hiiumaa Island is a great destination for your holiday. The region has wonderful landscapes, where history rests at every corner and where you will hear amazing stories from the locals, perfect for sharing with friends at your next gathering.
