Sharpen your senses and take in all that this majestic Greek island, home of the mythical Ikarus, has to offer. Situated in the far east of the Mediterranean, about 30 miles from the Turkish coast, it is embroidered with beautiful coves, rocky cliffs, steep valleys and broken canopy of scrub and olive groves.
Uncommon amongst the Greek Islands, Ikaria has remained true to herself and to the ways for her kin - the Ikarians. Tourism on Ikaria is carefree and unimposing for all and reflects an "Ikarian Balance" between nature, freedom, time and development. The island is named after Icarus, the young man in Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun and plunged into the sea, according to legend, close to Ikaria.
The astounding beaches with the golden sand and crystal clear waters provide the perfect ambiance to relish a day in the glorious Greek sun. Due to the absolutely laid-back atmosphere, Ikaria island is mostly frequented by free campers and naturists. A drive in the inland will bring you to scenic towns, expansive wineries and places of delicate grace. Furthermore, it will surprise you to find out that the inhabitants of this radiant island have a life expectancy of +10 years than the rest of Europe. It is not clear which of the components allow this unique characteristic, whether it is the natural air, the open door lifestyle, the wine, the lazy afternoon naps, the mountainous terrain that keeps individuals fit, or even the natural radiation of the granite rocks, but it remains a fact.
Food is believed to be distinct from that eaten on other Greek islands with lower life expectancy. Here you can nourish your body with the ikarians diet, as they drink a lot of herb tea and small quantities of coffee, leading to a lower daily calorie consumption. Their diet incorporates beans and not much meat or refined sugar. The locals also feast on locally grown and wild greens, some of which contain 10 times more antioxidants than are found in red wine, as well as potatoes and goat's milk. Ikaria is still an isolated island, patiently awaiting you and your family, which means that, especially in the villages in the north, where the highest longevity rates have been recorded, life is largely unaffected by the ”westernised way of living".
