The Ionian Islands are located on the western side of the Greece, stretching from the north of Epirus to the southern tip of the Peloponnese. This group of islands are strongly connected to Italy, through their fascinating history and great culture. The group is the most popular Greek islands complex of Greece, after the Cyclades and Crete. They distinguish themselves through architecture resembling the Venetian style a great deal, since these islands were occupied by the Venetians in the Medieval times, particularly capital towns such as Corfu Town, Zakynthos Town and Argostoli.
These parts have a delightful medieval air about them, with distinctive Venetian architecture consisting of paved paths, elegant mansions with no balconies and street arches. In addition to a particular architectural style, another feature which sets the Ionians apart from other Greek islands is the stunning natural beauty, full of greenery and wonderful beaches. Among them, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada are the most popular holiday islands, which anyone should get to see at least once during their lifetime.
The Ionian Islands are also traditionally called the Seven Islands, but the group includes many smaller islands as well as the seven principal ones. The six northern islands are off the west coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea and the seventh, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnese. The beaches found in this part of the world are frequently included among the best beaches in the world. Navagio in Zakynthos, Myrtos in Kefalonia, Agios Gordis in Corfu and Porto Katsiki in Lefkada are only few of these beaches that dazzle visitors with their scenic beauty and the stunning waters, offering guests out-of-this world summer holidays.
Truth be told, each Ionian Sea beach is a unique experience into itself, pampering travellers and filling their Greek holidays with fantastic memories, among virgin landscape and unwinding atmosphere. Often being portrayed in magazines and travel guides as among the most breathtaking beaches in the world, Navagio beach in Zakynthos is located on the northern side of the island and can be reached only by boat. Such boat trips to Navagio beach and the Blue Caves depart from various ports of Zakynthos, like Zante Town and Laganas. Navagio beach, meaning the Shipwreck, took its name from an old shipwreck that lies today on the shore.
The bay amazes passers-by through its soft white sand and alluring waters. Myrtos beach, the most famous beach of Kefalonia island is among the most photographed places in the world. This large, pebbled beach is surrounded by wild cliffs and gives a fantastic place to enjoy a day under the Greek sun, for either romantic couples or families with children. A small paradise into itself, the Ionian Islands most definitely warrant a place on your Greek travel itinerary, as they will give color to your life and fill it with cherished memories.
