Klaipeda County is one of Lithuania’s counties, situated in the western part of the country. It is the only county with a coastline, and the capital is at Klaipeda. Wondering what to visit? Well, there are plenty stuff you can do and see, whether you choose outdoor activities or simply visit the museums and learn about local culture. Kursiu Nerija National Park is a unique piece of nature. It has everything from beach, sea, forest and sand dunes. Nida Dunes is considered one of the most beautiful sights in Europe; it is a paradise, a mixture of golden sand, an idyllic lagoon, and fresh salty air. Palanga town is a “must see” if you have extra time, as it may take at least a day to explore all of its corners.
The shops and bars go all the way to the beach, and you can fully experience the life in an authentic fishermen’s village. Palanga Amber Museum is a lesson in Lithuanian royalty history. Nida and Neringa Beaches are not to be missed if you just want to soak in the sun, listen to the waves and seagulls and enjoy relaxing moments. Last, but certainly not least, is the Nemuras River Delta Regional Park, a wonderful work of nature and a unique place in Lithuania, with rich flora and fauna.
The Lithuanian Sea Museum is an obvious choice if you are traveling with children. It also has a dolphinarium, so this ensures a couple of hours of fun and entertainment. The old part of Klaipeda city is a step back in time, in the period the Germans ruled it. You have many bars and pubs you can choose from, where you can enjoy the stories of the locals.
Svyturys Brewery is Klaipeda’s beer factory, with an interesting and delicious tour, we may add. You will be given a white lab coat and invited to sample the world famous drink. The Clock and Watch Museum has an amazing exhibit of so many clocks you will simply lose track; clocks and watches everywhere you look. You can learn about their history and enjoy the interior of the mansion. Thomas Mann’s previous home was turned into a museum. You can sit in his study, look out the window and try to figure out where all of his inspiration came from. The Museum periodically hosts workshops, concerts, and seminars.
