West Dunbartonshire is a region located on the South Western coast of Scotland. It is formed of three towns: Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven. The area has dramatic contrasts, from the borders of Loch Lomond to the majestic promenades of Clyde and the beauty of Trossachs National Park. The Southern part of Loch Lomond’s shores form a fertile valley all the way to River Leven, a river famous for its salmon and sea trout populations. There are some pretty villages on the shores of the river, all the way to the old town of Dumbarton.
Dumbarton was established in the 5th century, as the capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. The original success of the town is the volcanic rock, that came from a 350 million years old volcano and it is the prime matter Dumbarton Castle was built from. The castle is one of the oldest sites in Britain, and it has proved its significant importance through the ages. The Western part of the town is home to the famous Overtoun Estate, a superb mansion built in 1859. The grounds will simply fascinate you with their beautiful landscapes, gorges, wooded glens and exotic gardens with species brought all the way from the Himalayas. You can also enjoy a stunning view of Kilpatrick Hills from the estate. Denny Tank Museum is one of the most popular attractions. It takes you back to the Victorian days, where you will see ship designs and a history of Clyde shipbuilding. It is a unique chance step back in time and discover the working ship model testing tank.
