The Azores is one of Portugal's two autonomous regions (along with Madeira).
To the east, on the island of Santa Maria, the warm white sand beaches are tempting, and the grapes that cover the hills like an amphitheatre look like huge steps. The largest island, So Miguel, is enticing with its Sete Cidades and Fogo Lagoons.
The islands of Terceira, So Jorge, Pico, Faial, and Graciosa in the Central Group are placed beautifully in the deep blue sea, where whales and dolphins may be sighted, much to the joy of visitors.
The natural waterfalls and lakes carved out by volcanoes on the island of Flores in the Western group are breathtaking.
These are the Azores, nine islands with as many similarities as differences, but where everyone enjoys the hospitality of their residents.
