Elafonisos, also known as the Cross-Sea Island, is a small Greek island between the Peloponnese and Kythira, peacefully lying off the coast of Cape Malea and Vatika. It is known as an attractive and relatively isolated island, beloved by those seeking tranquility and it separates the Aegean Sea in the east and the Ionian Sea in the west.
The main village on the island lies on the northern tip. Elafonisos Town is a charming fishing village, very peaceful and serene with traditional architecture and narrow alleys. Those who appreciate history will fall in love with this island, as it hosts the ancient sanctuaries of Athena, Poseidon and Apollo. Another impressive landmark is the church of Agios Spyridon. Constructed in a rock, this place of worship offers a breathtaking sunset view, leaving you with precious memories.
Trips to the nearby islets Kasella, Gaidouronisi, Lepto and Agia Sofia will prove fascinating. However, the most alluring feature of Elafonissos island are the exotic beaches with the golden sand and the clear water. Among these, one stands out – Simos beach. Located on the southern side of the island, this exotic shoreline is quite popular for camping and it is considered to be one of the top beaches in Greece, exuding a tropical air most appreciated by tourists. Simos actually consists of two beaches, Megalos (Large) Simos and Mikros (Small) Simos.
The former, Megalos Simos is the longest beach in Elafonissos, whereas Mikros Simos can be discovered within a short walking distance from there. Additionally, when the weather is windy, Simos attracts many windsurfers which thrive in this exotic environment. On the north-west side of the island one can discover the magnificent beach of Kalogeras. This shoreline is closely related to the ancient city of Elafonissos, as per some rather interesting archeological discoveries that were excavated in the area. The beach has an inviting football ground, for those who love sports and its many cedar trees and scenic sand dunes mix together in a picturesque whole.
The beach of Kontogoni is found on the north-western tip of Elafonissos Island, in close distance to the main village of Elafonisos and is surrounded by a eastern coastal road. The area provides accommodating features such as villas, studios for rent and some exquisite restaurants, ensuring you a fabulous trip. On the way to Simos, on the southern side of the island one comes across a jewel of the area – Lefki beach, considered as one of the most breathtaking shorelines on Elafonisos. Its popularity increases each year, due to its excellence and yet its charm and tranquil air is not at all diminished.
Ideally located, its coast being protected by the south and south-west winds, it is a perfect destination for swimming, sunbathing and general relaxation, blessed with smooth, soft sand and bright, crystalline waters.
