Futuna Island is part of the Territory of the Wallis and Futuna Island and it is located in the South Pacific, neighboring Fiji to the South, Samoa to the East and Tuvalu to the North. The whole island is hosting around 12000 people and its largest city and capital is called Mat-Utu. Futuna has roughly 5000 inhabitants and an overall surface of 80 km2 and it lies 100 miles away from Wallis. Due to its geographical position, Futuna Island is a recurrent touristic attraction for travelers who seek exotic landscapes and breathtaking beaches.
The first inhabitants of this island were the Samoa people whose rich cultural patrimony has been passed on to this day. In the 17th century, the area was occupied by the British and Dutch colonists and a century later the French settled here and started to Christianize the indigenous population. French still maintains its sovereign status over the island where the official language is French and the local currency, the CFP franc. Nevertheless, the population’s strong commitment to their traditions and customs was well preserved and so was the Futunan language used by the locals.
The islands’ status of French overseas collectivity brings many European tourists to this place where they can enjoy the wonderful sight, practice sports like diving, snorkeling, visit isolated beaches. For the last activity, the simplest way to move around and get to exotic hideaways is booking a berth. There are several available options at MarinaReservation.com which allow prior reservation.
Some of the best places to visit when you reach Futuna Island are the Basilica of Saint Peter Channel built in the 20th century, which is tightly connected to an important cultural figure, Pierre Chanel, the first Catholic Saint of Polynesia whose martyrdom turned him into a spiritual leader.
The most prominent aspect of Futuna’s relief is the fact that it is a volcanic island which is surrounded by reefs. The volcanos lie right at the heart of the island and the most reputable one is Mt Puke, which is over 750 meters high. A hiking tour to this peak also offers a splendid view of the island and the chance to observe the luxuriant vegetation and exotic bird species.
The Eastern coast of the Island is the place where most tourists gather because it has the most beautiful beaches with fine sand and turquoise waters. Travelers who book a berth can also enjoy the splendid views on the isolated and uninhabited island Alofi which is close to Futuna, the house of the spectacular Loka Cave. Archeological ruins are another top attraction and the rocky sight of the island enhance this wondering experience.
The local cuisine is mostly based on fresh fish dishes and there are several facilities where tourists can enjoy a tasty meal right next to the shore. The picturesque and quiet surroundings recommend Futuna as a top destination for travelers who want to unwind and reconnect with nature.
