Mahé is an island located in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Mahé has the largest surface in comparison with its other sister island, and it hosts more than 70 000 inhabitants. The most important city of the island is Victoria, which is also the capital city and home to over 80% of the Mahé population. The island offers many touristic attractions for sea lovers and hiking amateurs.
Mahé and the rest of the Seychelles islands have probably been uninhabited for centuries. The first historical proofs that include references to the archipelago date back to the 17th centuries. The first Europeans who set foot on these lands were a crew of navigators led by Captain Sharpeigh. In the 18th century, the French took over the island. A long series of battles and disputes between the French and British forces were carried on throughout the following two centuries. In the late 70’s the island was granted its independence and became a republic of the Commonwealth.
Nowadays Mahé is one of the major touristic attractions of the Seychelles archipelago; hundreds of tourists are lured by the vast beaches with beautiful sands and the possibility to practice all kinds of water sports or book a berth and visit the splendid surroundings.
Some of the natural beauties of this island are: the Morne Seychellois National Park, a wide forest territory, home to hundreds of exotic bird species; the park spreads over almost 20% of the island’s surface and delights travelers with its mangrove trees and the peak Morne Seychellois, the highest point in the Seychelles. Near the park, there is another major attraction, the tea factory SeyTé Tea where visitors are shown and explained how this ancient beverage is produced. The Sanctuary at Roche Caiman is another main attraction; this constructed wetland is a good sightseeing spot. For culture and history lovers, there are two major objectives they shouldn’t skip: the Natural History Museum in Victoria where they can admire the natural vestiges dating back to remote geological eras and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception located in the same city, a national historic monument whose splendid dome and facades are worth seeing.
Some of the most extraordinary beaches on the island are Beau Vallon, offering a broad range of modern accommodation facilities, Anse Intendance, an intimate location where people can enjoy the sight and the sound of the waves, Anse Soleil, a small, welcoming beach, Petite Anse, a predilect destination for families and tourist groups, Anse Royal, a long strip of fine sand.
