Salinas is located in the South of Puerto Rico. This municipality’s neighbors are Coamo, Guayama, Cayey and Santa Isabel. The location is also known as El Pueblo del Mojo Isleño or Cuna del Mojito Isleño because here is where the first mojito isleño, a traditional local dish, was prepared. The town’s coastal position and beautiful port make it a favorite destination for tourists visiting Puerto Rico.
Salinas is a relatively new settlement. It was built in the 19th . The founders of this municipality were Don Agustín Colón Pacheco, its first mayor and several other persons who built their homes and farms on the fertile land in this area. The land’s autonomy was granted in the year 1851 and the town started growing ever since. The main attractions of this area are its exotic beaches and water activities like snorkeling, surfing or berth booking and sailing.
Some of the most important objectives tourists usually check out are Centro de Arte y Cultura praising a vast collection signed by the Puerto Rican artist Tom Batista, the Puerto Rico International Speedway, a center dedicated to automobile races, motorcycles racing or Go-Karts competitions, the sports Museum, the Olympic museum Museo Puertorriqueño del Deporte Albergue Olimpico, the military settlement Campamento Santiago which dates back to the beginning of the previous century and is still used for training purposes by the United States troops, the National Steinbeck Center where literature lovers can get a better grasp of the author’s life and work.
The old city center of Salinas is also a beautiful place where tourists can enjoy the local dishes in one of the numerous restaurants, have a drink in a cozy pub or go shopping in one of the chic boutiques. There are several other charming locations around the town: Plaza del Mercado, Plaza de Los Fundadores, the Jibaro Monument, Plaza Delicias, the church Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate, the Pescador monument.
Salinas has several natural treasures that are worth visiting: the Aguirre Forest Reserve where travelers can admire the mangrove forest, the rare water species called Manatee or admire the colorful birds.
